Sassu teams may be rusty

Sassu's softball arm has expressed its concern over its teams' readiness for the upcoming National Provincial Championships in Limpopo later this month.

Both the men's and women's teams last held a camp on January 24.

Benny Mashamaite, assistant coach of the men's team, lamented the effect this state of affairs will have on the team's performance at the championships.

"We should have had at least four camps by now, but the next one will be two days before the games starts," said Mashamaite.

"This is not good enough. We wonder why people are shirking their responsibilities. It is as if they do not realise that we belong to the country and, as students, we are the future.

"Institutions have declined to pay for students. For instance, Tshwane University of Technology (Rand) are the reigning Sassu champions, yet the institution is not paying for students to attend the camps.

"What more should we do to be taken seriously? We also urge Softball South Africa to come to the party and help out," Mashamaite said.

Meanwhile, South African Student Sports Union ladies will be playing for the first time in a major league (A league) at the championships, and will be using the event to prepare for the Summer Universiade in Bangkok, Thailand, from August 8-18.

"This is a very difficult league, but with the type of players that we have, we can do it," said Trevor Mogale, the women's head coach.

"It is to our advantage to play with people whose experience matches international standards. However, we have been weakened by the sudden withdrawal of KwaZulu-Natal players, whose province felt they have to represent it.

"... Either way, I'm confident that with the girls I have, we can deliver the goods," Mogale said.
