It is noteworthy that Home Affairs Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has appealed to the public to help root out corruption in her department.

Especially worrying, as the minister pointed out herself, is the collusion of pastors and traditional leaders who help foreigners to access grants "by making affidavits [for foreigners] confirming that they are locals".

Helping people who have no right to grants to access them is a serious crime.

This is the message the minister must communicate to the public in the strongest terms.

A national drive against identity document scam is long overdue, as is prioritisation of the fight against this kind of racket.
