As government efforts to protect consumers gather momentum, MP Patricia de Lille and South African Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni will speak at the 2007 Consumer Rights Day conference next Wednesday.
The conference, to be hosted by the National Consumer Forum and Absa Bank, will tackle issues around consumer protection and their rights.
Recent moves to deepen South Africa's democracy by empowering consumers include the National Credit Act, passed last year, and the Consumer Protection Bill, currently in process.
Along with other laws like the Competition Act, this legislation seeks a fairer deal for consumers.
The Consumer Protection Bill will also try to encourage and support the development of civil society groups that empower consumers.
The conference will bring together business, the government and non-governmental organisations to address ways of making the public and private sectors more accountable to consumers.
Also included in the high-profile speaker lineup will be competition commissioner Shan Ramburuth, national credit regulator Gabriel Davel and South African Bureau of Standards regulatory executive Moses Moeletsi.
