Bachelor Boy wows his fans with a slick show

What a weekend of international stars. Not only did Westlife and Michael Bolton start off their South African tours in Johannesburg, but the doyen of the music scene for the past half- century also returned to this country after an absence of 12 years.

Yes, the Bachelor Boy was back in town. Sir Cliff Richard is on a whistle-stop tour of South Africa, with performances at Carnival City on Friday and the Dome on Saturday night.

And he wowed his - mostly white and, dare I say, ageing - fans with a slick, if somewhat old-fashioned performance.

With hits such as Bachelor Boy, Livin' Doll, Summer Holiday and The Young Ones to name a few, Richard established himself as a force to be reckoned with in the late 1950s and 1960s.

He has remained a presence on the pop scene right up until today with his easy-to-listen-to music.

His latest project is an album of duets with living as well as departed singers of his era.

Backed by a six-man band as well as four vocalists, Sir Cliff performed a selection of hits from his early years as well as some of his later works.

He remains the squeaky clean "bachelor boy", retaining his boyish good looks. Unlike many of his co-stars on the pop scene, he steered clear of the drugs, sex and rock 'n roll lifestyle and leads a private life.

He ends his South African tour with performances at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town tomorrow and on Wednesday night.
