One of Sowetan's many nation-building campaigns has brought a much-needed windfall of healthcare gifts to 15 loyal readers.

Thousands of readers also gained immensely from the regular advice columns in the newspaper that encouraged personal hygiene and general cleanliness around the home.

The columns were based on anecdotal accounts of life at Othandweni, a home for orphaned, abandoned and vulnerable children in Mofolo, Soweto.

In the articles and photographs, published over 16 weeks between September and December, Othandweni's manager, Goodness Dlamini, and the home's house mothers related many bitter-sweet stories about the children they care for, the oldest of whom are 18.

The articles attested to the value of clean bodies and surroundings.

Readers were invited to enter a competition and this week Dettol's brand manager, Preetesh Sewraj, and Dlamini met three of the 15 winners - Elizabeth Mokoena, Thoko Zondo and Nothemba Dlali - at Othandweni to celebrate the success of the developmental synergy.

The other 12 winners are Shirley Motlakeng, Sepeke Ntuli, David Basimane, Oganne Keatlaretse, Amos Rangata, Lindiwe Nkutha, Frank Zwane, Mpho Ramphele, Jeremiah Fox, Busa Mthiyane, Pauline Gule and Peter Mokhabuki.
