Tsakane received a R15 million windfall to rebuild the local stadium in the sprawling township.
Duma Nkosi, Ekurhuleni mayor, turned the sod for the project on Wednesday.
"It is our hope and dream as a municipality that the complex will be used to unearth local talent and produce stars of tomorrow who will take part in national and international events," said Duma.
The department of provincial and local government contributed R11 million to the project, through the municipal infrastructure grant, and R4 million came from Ekurhuleni Metro.
The construction of the complex has already started and it is expected to be completed in March next year.
The new facility will include a soccer pitch, athletics track, two training fields, tennis and volleyball courts, to mention a few.
It is expected that the track and football pitch would be built to Olympic and Fifa standards.
Local sports enthusiast said the reconstruction of the complex was overdue because the stadium was vandalized more than 10 years ago.
Dan Nkuna, chairman of the local athletics club, said he was happy that the runners won't have to travel 15km to Geluksdal for a training session any more.
Webster Selelo, chairman of the Tsakane Football Association, said: "It will be a relief to Vodacom and Castle League affiliates who were forced to move their fixtures to KwaThema because of the bad state of the stadium."
