Golfer John Bele took advantage of the absence of favourite Omar Sandys to walk away with the title at the Vusi Ngubeni Development Strokeplay at the Kempton Park Country Club yesterday.

Sandys picked up a wrist injury in the final round of the Telkom PGA Championship at the Country Club Johannesburg on Sunday.

The Vusi Ngubeni Development Strokeplay started on Monday and ended yesterday.

Sandys, who is considered a veteran golfer and was a favourite for the Strokeplay, had three good rounds in the Telkom PGA but shot 80 in the final round after a wrist injury, finishing tied 75th.

He was a top tip after early rounds of 72, 70 and 72, but he faltered in the fourth and last round after the injury.

"I was playing well in the first three rounds, but in the last round my wrist started to ache," said a disappointed Sandys. "It started after the third hole in the last round, that is why I shot 80 and lost out completely.

"Actually, I had a problem with my putting and I was still working on it."

Sandys said it was unfortunate that he missed out on the Vusi Ngubeni Development Strokeplay.

Sandys will take part in the Mount Edgecombe Trophy in Durban from March 8 to 11.
