Following the demise of the once-feared Vaal Professionals, residents of Sedibeng have embarked on a plan to ultimately have their own professional club.
According to the residents, this will help ensure that the George Thabe Stadium in Sharpeville does not become a white elephant after the 2010 World Cup.
Sedibeng residents are hoping that George Thabe will be used after the 2010 Local Organising Committee said it will be used as a training ground for the 2010 Fifa World Cup.
As a result, the Sedibeng Football Foundation has organised a meeting at Pooe Shopping Complex in Everton on Sunday at 9.30am.
"The foundation's professional soccer committee feels there is a dire need to start a new club," said Basil Mohalane, a member of the committee.
"Sedibeng has produced many household names in soccer, from players to administrators. It is not on that we do not even have a club in the National First Division.
"We appeal to the residents of Sedibeng to attend; unity is strength. Our plan is to ensure that George Thabe does not become a white elephant after 2010. We want to start a club that all the community members will be part off," added Mohalane, a former co-director of Vaal Professionals.
Some of the top administrators from Sedibeng include Molefi Oliphant, Kenneth Kubheka, Simon Lehoko, Selokela Masetle, Thami Tom and Sipho Nkumane.
Current and former professional players from that area include Papi Zothwane, Steve Lekoelea, Jabu Mnguni, Ernest Marumo, Sailor Tshabalala and Lucky Mhlathe.
