Kenneth Phiri, community liaison officer for sponsors TSB, has promised that this year's Selati Super Cup, which gets under way on Saturday, will be a cracker of a tournament.
The tournament is well organised and the richest in Mpumalanga amateur football, with the winners guaranteed a cool R20 000 cash prize, a trip to watch the Vodacom Cup final and a weekend trip away.
A total of 101 men's and nine women's teams have registered to take part.
It is contested by teams under the Nkomazi region, which is an area bordering rural areas near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga.
Orlando Pirates defender Lucas Thwala is from Nkomazi.
"The tournament has grown from strength to strength since it started in 2003.
"We started with 32 teams and last year we had 57 teams taking part," said Phiri.
"The aim of the tournament, because we are aware that Mbombela is one of the cities to host some of the games during the World Cup in 2010, is to create enthusiasm among soccer fans and make our teams to start to play organised football."
Defending champions Home Killers will play Vultures at Phiva Khoza soccer field on Sunday.
The women's tournament will kick off on March 17.
