Soloists sought for festival

Every September people converge on the Standard Bank Arena to enjoy the Sowetan, SABC and Transnet Foundation Massed Choir Festival.

Every September people converge on the Standard Bank Arena to enjoy the Sowetan, SABC and Transnet Foundation Massed Choir Festival.

Preparations are already under way for this extravaganza, which is a part of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation's portfolio.

The festival features a 100-piece orchestra, 20 choirs, about eight soloists and a guest act. Securing the choirs, the orchestra and the guest acts is simple.

The difficult part is finding soloists, auditioning them and getting them to participate in rehearsals.

Auditions for the festival soloists - sopranos, mezzo sopranos, altos, tenors, baritones, basses - will be held at the SABC's Radio Park in Auckland Park on Saturday.

Candidates are required to prepare a solo piece for piano accompaniment from the classical Western repertoire and one vernacular, or African, piece.

The Western piece should have a score.

All enquiries should be directed to Lebogang Tlomatsane at 011-447-6204, fax 011-447-5199 or e-mail lebo@makwetla.co.za. - Victor Mecoamere
