Tim Sukazi, manager of Silver Stars midfielder Thuso Phala, revealed yesterday that the "Tycoons' have decided to release the gifted player after they failed to agree on a new salary.

Sowetan understands that 20-year-old Phala has been getting a monthly salary of R2000 and that his request for R15000 a month was rejected by the club's boss, Larry Brookstone.

"Larry informed me today [yesterday] that he has decided to release the player and I will collect his clearance before the end of the week," said Sukazi, who is also Phala's lawyer.

"The boy wanted a better salary, which the club was not prepared to pay. Another thing that disturbed me was the fact that the boy has not been training with the team since last Thursday.

"I learnt that he had a fallout with Brookstone and this resulted in him staying at home."

Owen da Gama, Stars' coach, dismissed allegations that Phala was chased away by Brookstone at training last Thursday.

"There was a misunderstanding in the whole matter. Phala was promoted to the senior team at the beginning of the season and is getting R2500, not R2000," Da Gama said yesterday.

But Da Gama would not elaborate further on the matter when Sowetan later contacted him to respond to Sukazi's revelation that Phala has been cleared by Stars.

"I don't want to discuss this matter with the media now," he said.
