The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences does more than just teach about agriculture and the environment. It offers a rich and diverse range of study opportunities to both school-leavers and adults.

The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences does more than just teach about agriculture and the environment. It offers a rich and diverse range of study opportunities to both school-leavers and adults.

The aim is to help students of all ages to expand and improve their existing experience and qualifications through higher and continuing education and training.

The college has two schools, namely the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the School of Environmental Sciences.

Each school in turn consists of two departments. In the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences, various programmes are offered in the Department of Consumer and Life Sciences and in the Department of Agriculture, Animal Health and Human Ecology, as well as through the Indigenous Technological Knowledge Unit.

The undergraduate programmes include the following degree and diploma courses: A BSc with various specialisations, namely natural sciences and environmental management. The degree cannot be completed in less than three years.

The Department of Consumer and Life Sciences offers a degree, a Baccalaureus in Consumer Science, with specialisations such as clothing management and hospitality management.

The Department of Agriculture, Animal Health and Human Ecology offers various diplomas and degrees, namely a BTech and National Diploma in Agricultural Management, a BTech and National Diploma in Animal Health, a degree in Human Ecology. The focus is on community agriculture, social development and community nutrition or a BSc degree in Agricultural Science.

Career possibilities for students completing the Diploma in Agricultural Management include farm manager or farmer, agricultural advisor, agricultural marketing specialist, agricultural development officer, learning officer or research officer.

The following career opportunities are available to people with a diploma in animal health: animal health technician, feedlot manager, meat inspector, pharmaceutical representative or stock farm manager.

The School of Environmental Sciences offers diplomas as well as under- and postgraduate programmes in the Department of Geography and the Department of Environmental Sciences. Specialised research is undertaken by the Applied Behavioural Ecology and Ecosystem Research Unit. In the Department of Geography, students may take geography as a major for the BA and BSc degrees at Unisa. The department also offers an honours programme in geography - BA or BSc, and master's and doctoral degrees in geography, human sciences or natural sciences.

The Department of Environmental Sciences offers an NDip, BTech and MTech in nature conservation, an NDip, BTech and MTech in horticulture, and under- and postgraduate programmes in environmental sciences.

The institution allows students a wider choice of career-focused qualifications and based on the principles of continuing education, it is now also possible for students to begin with a certificate programme and to end with a degree.
