The assault case against a man who allegedly hit his four-month-old baby with a full bottle of beer was withdrawn yesterday.

The mother of the child told the Masoyi periodic court in Mpumalanga that her husband, a construction worker, might lose his job because of the repeated absences that were necessary to allow him to attend court hearings.

King Mhlanga, 32, of Nyongane near Hazyview, said he accidentally hit the baby during an argument with his wife last week.

The wife, Busisiwe Mhlanga, fled with the baby and called the police. When they arrived at the couple's home, Mhlanga allegedly attacked them and bit the policeman who tried to arrest him.

The baby sustained injuries to the head but has recovered.

Mhlanga was also charged with resisting arrest and was accused of biting the police officer on the elbow. He was released on R500 bail.

He will appear in court again on April 20.
