It is with severe disappointment that I read the article about the Wall of Remembrance. Soldiers who fought to stop bombings of innocent people, such as those in Magoo's Bar that were bombed by people including Ekurhuleni Metro police chief Robert McBride, are being compared to Nazis.
It is with severe disappointment that I read the article about the Wall of Remembrance. Soldiers who fought to stop bombings of innocent people, such as those in Magoo's Bar that were bombed by people including Ekurhuleni Metro police chief Robert McBride, are being compared to Nazis.
Our Arts and Culture Minister Pallo Jordan has no grasp of history, it would seem. The Nazis gassed people, smashed babies' heads against walls and tortured innocent non-combatants, acts that I would gladly have taken up arms against.
While others like myself hated those types of "men" - please read animals - fought to protect those who could not protect themselves.
Did the minister ever pick up a weapon and face the enemy, or did he get by on the blood of his comrades?
My friends died in a war that was not theirs, not to protect a bent ideology, which apartheid was, but to prevent the bombing of schools and bus stops. Young men and women bled, suffered and died for both groups of politicians while they hid in their offices and talked. Remember us all.
For those who think I am a "boer", I adopted South Africa at age 16 after coming here from the UK and I am more patriotic than most born here.
I have my doubts that this letter will see the light of day, but then anyone who criticises the government or its officials are "unpatriotic".
