The Eastern Cape transport department has demanded tough action against the owner and driver of a bus that was involved in an accident in which 50 schoolchildren were injured on Wednesday.

The bus had been declared unroadworthy a day before the accident.

A total of 117 pupils from Ndimakude Senior Secondary School in Mount Ayliff were on the bus when its brakes failed.

Five of the injured had to endure further trauma when the ambulance transporting them to hospital overturned.

Bus owner Thobile Nketshiso and his driver, Mxolisi Bathweni, are facing charges of reckless and negligent driving and of using an unroadworthy vehicle.

They appeared in court yesterday and were each granted R1000 bail.
