Mpumalanga's largest district municipality, Ehlanzeni, is searching for ghost workers by calling all employees to personally collect their cheques for this month's salaries.
Both councillors and officials will for the first time in the history of the municipality queue with their identification documents to receive their salaries.
Ehlanzeni administers five local municipalities - Mbombela (Nelspruit), Umjindi (Barberton), Nkomazi (Malelane), Thaba Chweu (Lydenburg) and Bushbuckridge.
Municipality spokesman Mabutho Sithole told Sowetan on Wednesday: "The verification process will help us to establish whether or not we have ghost workers."
