A group of people protested outside the SABC offices in Durban yesterday, accusing the public broadcaster of being a government "conveyer belt".

Shouting "Away with Snuki Zikalala, away", the demonstrators, led by the Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI), claimed the SABC only publicised the government's achievements and ignored its failures.

The protesters said the corporation ignored widespread popular discontent about poor service delivery.

FXI spokesman Virginia Magwaza said : "The SABC is moving away from its mandate as an independent public broadcaster and is becoming one that is controlled remotely by the ruling party."

The protesters called for the SABC to note the findings of the Sisulu commission which confirmed the allegation that political analysts at the public broadcaster had been blacklisted for making "anti-Mbeki" comments.
