A man who beat to death two of his girlfriends and assaulted another was sentenced to life in prison yesterday.

Mlamuli Mnisi, 27, of Zola 3 in Soweto, stood motionless in the dock as the sentence was passed.

Judge Boissie Mbhain sentenced him in the Johannesburg high court to life for the murder of his girlfriend, Nomsa Mabena, in July 2004. He beat her to death after she refused to dance with him. Witnesses said Mnisi removed the body on a trolley.

Six months later, Mnisi bludgeoned Bongiwe Ngema to death with a plank.

The investigating officer, Detective Amos Maneta, said Mnisi told the police a day after killing Ngema that she had been kidnapped.

Police discovered Ngema's body in a room Mnisi rented in Emndeni, Soweto. The plank with which she was killed was found hidden at the back of the room.

After Mnisi was arrested on December 17, Maneta linked him to other cases, including a rape in 1999, the aggravated assault in 2003 of his girlfriend, Nokuphila Thwala, and the assault of Thwala's mother, Johanna.

Yesterday the court sentenced him to 15 years for Ngema'smurder, three years for assaulting Thwala and a year for kicking her mother. The lesser sentences will run concurrently with the life sentence.

The judge described Mnisi as a coward who showed no remorse for attacking defenceless women.

Maneta said: "I feel great that I managed to put an end to his reign of terror. I spent sleepless nights gathering evidence to ensure a successful prosecution."
