The brouhaha by the commercial agricultural unions regarding land expropriation is inappropriate. It is just empty noise caused by those who want to taint what our constitution provides for. Their behaviour smacks of greed.
When we talk of redressing past injustices, it stands to reason that those who benefited from the old order would have to sacrifice some of those benefits now.
When such resources are sought to realise our national objective of alleviating poverty and ensuring that there is socio-economic development for those who have been marginalised, it then follows that those who own the resources must release some of them for the sake of national development and reconciliation.
The question of land is not just a struggle that can be advanced outside the context of a better life for all and fostering national unity given our volatile past. The land affairs and agriculture departments must have enough courage to forge ahead with expropriation in instances where negotiations have dragged on.
Landless people are running out of steam and their patience is also fading. They say that if expropriation is painful to white commercial farms, so were the dispossessions in the past.
