A gang member who was shot and wounded in a busy store during a cash-in-transit robbery was jailed for 25 years by the Pietermaritzburg high court yesterday.

Sentencing Mandlenkosi Majoro, 32, who was arrested when wounded in a Game store in Pietermaritzburg in 2003, KwaZulu-Natal Judge President Vuka Tshabalala rejected his plea that his lack of parental guidance was a substantial and compelling circumstance in mitigation.

In March 2003, Majoro's gang pounced on Coin Security guard Korouna Achery, who had collected R104788 from Game.

One grabbed Achery's neck and held a pistol to his head, while another grabbed Achery's pistol.

Achery fell down and the gang took a cash box and ran out of the store.

A customer in the store tackled Majoro. Shots were exchanged and Majoro was wounded and arrested.

The 25 years were made up of 15 for robbery, an effective five years for three attempted murders, and five years for the firearm offence. - Sapa
