Technology, globalisation and over-exposure to sex have made the world a worse place.
This is the opinion of US motivational speaker Iyanla Vanzant, who is here for eight days to advise Johannesburg professional women.
The author of In the Meantime and Everyday I Pray, also blames changes on the Americanisation of the world.
"Wherever I go, people are so American, I guess because of what they see on TV and what they listen to and that contributes to violence," she said.
The New Yorker attributes the increase in child rape in South Africa in part to US-made videos that people are exposed to daily.
Vanzant said crime has increased worldwide because people have a sense of entitlement to everything.
"People are constantly reminded of what they do not have, hence they are so angry and they want those things, whether it be a house or a car," she explained.
Vanzant said she focuses in her talks on everything that she knows women want and need.
"I listen to their hearts and they listen to mine," she said.
"Everywhere I go people want the same things. We want better for ourselves and for our children," she said.
