Mafikeng's executive mayor has vowed to pursue a former municipal manager until he has repaid the money he allegedly owes the council.

The municipality's former manager, Tiro Mose, and former chief financial officer, Tsholofelo Mokgopa, were suspended in August after allegations of mismanagement, maladministration, insubordination and involvement in various irregularities were made against them.

Mokgopa resigned immediately after she was suspended, but Mose is contesting his suspension.

Mose submitted a letter of resignation on February 13, shortly before his disciplinary hearing was due to begin. The hearing was then cancelled.

But executive mayor Themba Gwabeni said yesterday that he would launch civil claims against Mose.

"We have suffered a great loss. The council parted with R695000 in legal costs and for a forensic investigation.

"Instead of Mose answering the charges against him, he has opted to jump ship," Gwabeni said.

The council claims Mose and Mokgopa paid themselves R1,2million in unauthorised performance bonuses.

"I want to recoup the money the municipality lost through negligence or mismanagement on his part," the mayor said.

Attemptsby Sowetan to contact Mose were unsuccessful.
