The American International School of Johannesburg will host a development soccer tournament at the school on Saturday aimed at creating awareness of the 2010 World Cup.

Funky Ralethe, spokesman for the organisers, said the tournament will cater for under-12s. The yearly tournament is in its second year.

A total of 32 schools will take part in the competition, which will be known as the 2010 World Cup Fever tournament.

"There are several private, government and farm schools from as far afield as Alexandra, Atteridgeville, Diepsloot, Mahwelereng, Indermark and Brits who have shown interest," said Ralethe.

"The aim of the tournament is to create awareness about the spin-offs of hosting the World Cup.

"We will also be using the tournament to promote unity and friendship."

The school is planning to stage a similar tournament on March 10 for the under-14 boys and girls. It will also take place at the school's premises.
