The Volkswagen Kombi has come a long way in the automotive history of South Africa.
As with all VW products, the Kombi has improved over the years and in its latest incarnation will make its predecessors proud. It is bigger, more spacious, more luxurious and much more fun.
At first sight, we knew that our used 2005 VW Kombi 2.5TDI, from The Glen Volkswagen, was no ordinary family vehicle. Though this is a really huge family car that can easily carry eight people, it doesn't feel that big when you're driving it and the steering is exceptionally light. This makes city driving no problem.
But it is on the open road that the 2,5litre four-cylinder turbo- charged diesel engine Kombi really excels. With power delivery of 96kW and a massive 340Nm of torque, the Kombi has no problem carrying a full load of passengers and their luggage. This Kombi comes with a five-speed manual gearbox that delivers power to the front wheels.
The middle and last row of seats can each seat three people and can also be folded down to increase loading capacity. But even with all the seats in place, there is more than sufficient loading space.
The relatively high ground clearance of this Kombi enables it to avoid damage to the chassis and makes it suitable for driving in the bush or across rough or uneven surfaces.
The front doors come with storage buckets big enough to keep food and drinks in for a long journey. The driver's and front passenger seats have armrests, which makes them comfortable.
The seating position is high and, together with the large windows around the vehicle, ensures a good view of the road.
The steering is height adjustable to make the driving position even more precise for the driver.
Our used test model was still in superb condition and could tackle most challenges like a new car.
The cloth seats were neat and did not show much wear and tear, though they might do so with time. The sliding door at the back opens widely enough for passengers to get into and out of the last row of seats easily.
This Kombi is nothing like the previous breadbin models - its luxury and safety features include air-con, dual airbags, front loading CD player, electric windows, power steering, ABS brakes and central locking.
Though it had 77000km on the clock, this car is an exceptionally good buy at just R219000. It comes with the remainder of the three-year or 120000km factory warranty. And the 16inch Michelin tyres will be good for at least another 20000km.
