Thousands of matriculants over the past 12 years have benefited from a unique full-time course in mathematics and physical science being offered at Witwatersrand College of Science every year.

All the lecturers are graduates of South African universities. They all have industrial working experience.

The students are guaranteed excellent tuition and career guidance.

Lecturers and students perform experiments to illustrate the practical application of physics and chemistry. Part-time tuition in biology and English are also provided for those students who need it.

The basics necessary for a proper understanding of all subjects are taught. All of the essentials for matric maths are taught from as far back as grade 6 and for physical science from grade 10. The college does not assume students understand work taught prior to the matric year. Last year a student, Ayabulela Booi, who had not done maths since grade 9, achieved 97 percent in his final exam. It was a true examination mark because the college does not submit portfolio marks, which could boost scores, to the department, .

Many former students are practising doctors, dentists, scientists, engineers, technicians and accountants.

The college says past students are not among the 65 percent of university dropouts because they have been taught the value of hard work. Regular tests and exams are held. Students interact with lecturers on a one-to-one basis. Those who have learning and personal problems get help from qualified staff.

Students write the Gauteng education department's exams in November. Students from seven of the nine provinces spend an academic year at the college.

Those from provinces outside Gauteng can stay in private accommodation situated within walking distance of the college. Strict discipline is maintained and the college does not allow anyone to prevent other students from getting the education they desire, and for which their parents are paying.

Enrolment is limited and every year the college is forced to turn away late applicants. It is, therefore, essential for prospective students to enrol early to avoid disappointment.

Principal N V Bantjes is a registered professional scientist who has worked in the precious metals and coal mining industries as a chief chemist. He has also been vice-chancellor of a university of technology.
