A computer studies student in her early 30s is on the run from the police after a dagga plantation was discovered at her house.

Police were tipped off by community members that the woman was growing dagga in a mealie field in her back yard at Mbuzini in Mpumalanga.

When the police went to the woman's house they found dagga plants growing among the mealie plants. There was no one at the house.

"We chopped all the plants and filled three police bakkies," said police spokesman Constable Sibusiso Masinga.

Neighbours told the police that the woman's husband, who comes home every month- end, had told her to stop growing dagga in the yard.

Masinga said the woman's mother-in-law was also against the growing of dagga, but the woman had refused to heed their warnings that she could be arrested.

Police are investigating charges of possession and cultivation of dagga against the woman, who has been on the run since Friday last week.
