LUANDA - A British woman working for the London-based rights group Global Witness is being held in Angola after she was arrested at the weekend for spying, her lawyer said yesterday.

Sarah Wykes was detained in the oil-rich northern province of Cabinda while she was meeting members of civil society groups, lawyer David Mendes said.

"The authorities say she was in possession of subversive documents. We do not believe she had any document that could be considered as subversive," he said.

There was no immediate reaction from the national police spokesman.
