Two police vehicles have been sent to a garage workshop for repairs after they were involved in a three-car pile up at the weekend.

The incident occurred on Landros Mare Street in Polokwane on Saturday.

Limpopo police spokesman Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said the accident involved two police vehicles and a car belonging to a member of the local community.

He identified the cars as a Mazda sedan belonging to Polokwane police detectives, a BMW belonging to members of the organised crime unit in Gauteng, and another BMW belonging to a local motorist.

Ramatseba said the three cars bumped into one another at about 5.30pm. The occupants of the man's car, a nine-year-old boy and his 50-year-old father, escaped with minor injuries while the officers escaped unhurt.

Ramatseba said it was believed that all three drivers had been driving under the influence of alcohol.

"We have taken blood samples from all the drivers," he said.

Ramatseba said a case of negligent driving and driving while under the influence of alcohol had been opened against all the drivers.

"No one has been arrested yet. We are waiting for the results of the blood samples before forwarding the case to the director of public prosecutions for a decision," he said.

He said it was standard procedure for any police vehicle involved in an accident, be it serious or minor, to be taken to a workshop for repairs.
