Ajax Cape Town are in hot water following the behaviour of their followers after losing 1-0 to Black Leopards in a Castle Premiership encounter at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Friday evening.
Pandemonium broke out immediately after the final whistle when Ajax's followers bayed for referee Victor Hlungwani's blood, throwing missiles at him, his assistants and Leopards players.
Police had to come to the rescue of the security guards who could not cope with the situation.
Hlungwani and his assistants had to wait at least 15 minutes before leaving the field. Hlungwani lost control of the game, especially in the second half, when players from both teams hacked each other at will, but it was the home side who were penalised.
In the 70th minute, Hlungwani sent off Ajax defender Nazeer Allie for a second yellow after an off-the-ball incident between Bryce Moon and Eric Ramonale.
The referee instead went for Allie after consulting with his assistant, Lazarus Matela.
The Urban Warriors' players challenged the decision but Hlungwani stood firm.
An angry Ajax coach, Muhsin Ertugral, said: "The referee and his assistants were pathetic tonight. I am afraid our football will not prosper. I am totally disgusted. My plea to the powers that be - please choose the right people for the job."
Sowetan could not get comment from Leopards' coach Nans Schmidt as they left under escort. Leopards' goal came from Fisher Kondowe in the 42nd minute.
