Success is visible in the Modimola Expanded Public Works Programme project at Modimong in Taung North West.
Since R93,6million was pumped into the road construction project in February last year, it has moved ahead in leaps and bounds.
It scooped the prize for the best-managed project in the 2005 North West Premier's Public Sector Excellence Awards and was nominated for the Public Works Minister's EPWP Recognition Awards and the Impumelelo Innovation Awards.
As part of empowerment, five of the 16 graduate student contractors are engaged in the construction of a 5km stretch of a new gravel road between Modimola village and Masutlhe village.
The work includes the construction of stormwater drains and culverts and the installation of road signs. It will benefit public transport and provide access to essential services as it links the villages to the Masutlhe Clinic and the Masutlhe Primary School.
An amount of R4,1million has been set aside for this particular job.
Six other student contractors are involved in the first phase of the R4million Lotlamoreng Dam Development Initiative and the construction of additional farm infrastructure for the Modimola Farming Enterprise. Five young contractors are engaged in the Road Construction Project in Modimong and the construction of community halls in Modimong and Cokonyane villages in Taung.
According to the public works MEC Howard Yawa, the EPWP had benefited the people of the North West tremendously in terms of jobs and the provision of infrastructure and access to services.
