The man dubbed "The Beast of Malamulele" has still to make a court appearance after he was re-arrested on Tuesday.

Isaac Chuncheka Mabasa, 26, escaped from police custody on January 25 and raped five women - four in one day - in two days in and around Malamulelele in Limpopo.

Last year he also allegedly raped a woman.

A large crowd of community members, who had gone to the Malamulele magistrates' court hoping to see the suspected rapist in the dock, were disappointed.

"There are a number of aspects that the prosecutor has advised us to consider and act upon before the suspect can appear in court," said Mopani police spokesman, Superintendent Moatshe Ngoepe.

Mabasa is facing various charges including six of rape, illegal possession of a firearm, kidnapping, armed robbery and escaping from police custody. He was recaptured in a house in Kalkfontein in Gauteng on Tuesday.

He was being transported by police from Matachi prison in Thohoyandou to Brits in North West, where he was supposed to appear on other criminal charges, when he escaped.

One of the police officers allegedly removed the handcuffs from Mabasa so he could help them fix a puncture on their vehicle, and he escaped.

Mabasa met five women near Shikukwani village and threatened them with a panga. They fled.

He then met a couple at Nhombelani village and allegedly dragged the woman off and raped her.

The next day he allegedly raped four girls aged between 13 and 14 while they were on their way to fetch water.
