'Focus on parastatals'

Frank Maponya

Limpopo will "redefine" and "refocus" its parastatal companies to strengthen their productive capacity and the contribution they make to the province's economic development.

The plan was outlined by premier Sello Moloto in his state of the province speech in Lebowakgomo yesterday.

It entails the amalgamation of the Limpopo Economic Development Enterprises [Limdev], Trade and Investment Limpopo and the Limpopo Business Support Agency.

The amalgamation would reinforce parastatals' productive capacity and increase the contribution they would be able to make to provincial economic development, he said.

"As part of the restructuring process of our parastatals, government is also going to be looking at the asset base of Limdev for the purpose of unbundling and bringing Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) companies on board," Moloto said.

He said that Limdev owned shares in mining, in retail business and other properties.

He said Limdev's role should be facilitating participation of BEE companies in developing Limpopo.

Moloto said the shortage of technical planning, legal and financial management skills was a challenge, adding that there had been a significant increase in the number of women at senior management level in the public service.
