The rural town of Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga has lost one of its academics and scarce talents.
Zipho Michael Mokoena, a chief medical officer at Mapulaneng Hospital, died under mysterious circumstances at the weekend.
His body was found on Monday floating in the Dagama dam. His luxury car was parked on the roadside between White River and Hazyview.
Before he left home on Saturday night, his wife, Wendy, heard him say on the phone: "Chief, I'm coming to help you with the operation."
Mokoena was born 48 years ago in Kildare village in Malamule, on the border of the Kruger National Park.
He attended Njonjela Primary School and matriculated at Hoyohoyo High.
He studied medicine at Medunsa and worked in several Gauteng hospitals.
After many years in private practice, he returned home to work at Matikwane Hospital.
A year later he was appointed chief medical officer at Mapulaneng Hospital.
His wife said: "He would ask me to come with him to the hospital and I would stay in the car while he worked.
"He loved helping people anywhere, even when he was not at work," she said.
A hospital colleague said Mokoena did not have any problems that he knew of.
"He was a chief medical officer who earned enough and lived a happy life."
Mokoena is survived by his pregnant wife, two children, his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
His funeral takes place at his home in Mkhuhlu township soon.
