WELLINGTON - The world's first transsexual MP, New Zealand's Georgina Beyer, stepped down yesterday giving thanks for being able to make amends for her "lurid" past as a prostitute.

"The first transsexual in the world to be elected to parliament... it was inspirational in itself," she said in a farewell address.

Male-born Beyer, who underwent a sex-change operation in 1984, was elected to parliament in 1999 as a member of the ruling Labour Party. - Sapa
