Police are investigating a possible murder after the body of a top Mpumalanga medical doctor was found floating in a dam on Monday .
Zipho Michael Mokoena, 48, a chief medical officer at Mapulaneng Hospital in Bushbuckridge left his pregnant wife and kids on Saturday and was never seen alive again.
According to his wife Wendy, Mokoena left his home on Saturday night after a brief conversation on his cellphone.
"We were in the shops with the kids earlier in the day to buy shoes. On our return he asked me to prepare his favourite gushe [spinach]. I did that while he remained in the car listening to music," said his distraught wife.
When the meal was ready his wife called for him but he was on the cellphone.
The wife heard him say before leaving: "Chief I'm coming to help you with the operation."
In the morning the wife informed neighbours and family that her husband had not returned the night before and that his cellphone was switched off. They reported the matter to the police.
Hazyview police spokesman Captain John Mbambo said Mokoena's BMW X5 was found in the early hours of Sunday parked on the Da Gama Dam bridge between White River and Hazyview.
The car keys were still in the ignition.
Mbambo said Mokoena's body was found floating in the dam on Monday.
He said Mokoena might have been killed and his body dumped in the dam to look like suicide.
He said police investigations had been intensified.
