The Eastern Cape department of health will not give jobs to the KwaZulu-Natal nurses dismissed this month after an unprotected strike.

The department said yesterday it had noted reports that the nurses said they would seek jobs in Eastern Cape.

"The department wishes to make it clear that the affected nurses will not be accepted in the province, and a circular instructing managers not to consider their applications has been sent out to all our hospitals and district offices," it said.

But, the department was working with the national department and all other eight provinces to address the severe shortage of health professionals in public hospitals.

l The management at Fort Cox College of Agriculture in Eastern Cape said it would purge all the lecturers mobilising other staff members and arranging meetings.

This was the claim made yesterday by the disgruntled lecturers, who are dissatisfied with the management's refusal to increase their salaries.

A suspended lecturer, Themba Cebani, said: "People here are getting threats that they are going to be suspended or fired."

The college management has obtained a court interdict prohibiting lecturers from holding meetings on the premises .
