Inspector Juanita Killian said the men approached a Standard Bank ATM in Esselen Street at about 2am.
"While the men were busy blowing up the ATM, police arrived at the scene, a shootout ensued and the group fled empty-handed," said Killian.
Explosives were found at the scene.
