Three cheers for three star tutors

Three star teachers of mathematics, physical science and technology are an inspiration to the Free State's teaching corps.

Further education and training teacher Malanka Motlhloioa, general education and training teacher Maria Mokoena and retired tutor Agnes Moadira have qualified for the national finals of the yearly Aggrey Klaaste Mathematics, Science and Technology Educator of the Year competition. The awards ceremony takes place in Johannesburg on March 22.

South Africa faces a dearth of qualified, creative, dedicated, industrious and talented teachers of mathematics, science and technology.

The competition honours and empowers such teachers, so that these illustrious practitioners can inspire their peers.

Motlhloioa has been teaching for 23 years. He teaches grades 11 and 12 mathematics and physical science at Sehunelo Secondary School in the Motheo district.

He is a much sought-after moderator for matriculation examinations in maths and science, a teacher-training tutor and he runs a Telkom Foundation-sponsored maths, science and technology Saturday school. Motlhloioa runs extra classes for high school pupils during the winter and summer school holidays.

Mokoena, a grades 8 and 9 natural science teacher at Boitsebelo Junior Technical School in the Thabo Mofutsanyana district, has been teaching maths, science and technology for more than 20 years.

Her pupils participate in National Science Week and World Environmental Week activities as a compulsory learning exercise.

Mokoena runs a medicinal garden from which her charges gain immense knowledge about the value of their natural surroundings.

Moadira has been in the teaching game longer than Motlhloioa and Mokoena and helps tutors with curriculum development.
