A 31-year-old man from Mmabatho in the North West has been charged with murder after the burning to death of his two toddlers.

The man allegedly burnt his two children after an argument with his wife.

Molopo area police spokesman, Captain Job Mothibi, said the man had been separated from his wife for some time.

Mothibi said the man on Friday went to Montshioa where his wife stayed. There the couple had "some disagreement".

The man then allegedly took the children, age two and three, and went to Mmabatho where he lived. There the man is alleged to have burnt the toddlers.

Mothibi said it was not yet clear what the man used to burn his children, but their wounds were serious.

The two-year-old was taken to Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp, and the three-year-old to George Mkhari Hospital in GaRankuwa, where they died yesterday.

Mothibi said the man then tried to commit suicide by crashing his car. He is in the Mafikeng Hospital with serious injuries.

He is due to appear in the Mmabatho magistrates' court when he recovers.
