Police at Umzimkhulu on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal have warned the community to be aware of a scam allegedly run by Nigerians in which they ask people to deposit a large sum of money and then guarantee that it will double.

This comes after a 64-year-old pensioner, Eunice Nonkululeko Makhasi, was robbed of R30 000 on Monday by a "traditional healer" who promised her that if she gave him R30 000 it would double.

Superintendent Zandra Hechter said Makhasi told the police that a "healer" promised she would be "stinking rich" .

"The community must not hand their money over to any person who makes these promises to them," she warned.
