At least 22 factory workers in Durban had to be taken to hospital with respiratory problems yesterday morning, paramedics said.

Chris Botha, a spokesman for Netcare 911, said 18 of the workers were from the Beacon Sweets factory in the Jacobs industrial area.

One of them was from a nearby shoe factory. Some of those taken to hospital also had severe eye irritation, he said.

Health Department officials of eThekwini were reportedly taking air samples in the area to determine the source of the pollutant. - Sapa
