South Africa's manufacturing output grew 5percent year-on-year in December, slowing from November's 6,9 percent but still indicating a relatively strong momentum in the economy, data showed yesterday.

Growth for last year came in at 4,9percent. Analysts said that the growth reflected a strong performing economy that had been boosted by a depreciation of the rand of about 10 percent against the dollar in 2006.

"If we look at manufacturing, it seems to be benefiting from the buoyant conditions in the economy," Citadel economist Dave Mohr said. - Reuters
