Parents of pupils at Joylands Primary School in Hattingspruit, outside Newcastle in northern KwaZulu-Natal, have expressed concern over the alleged rape of a seven-year-old girl by her schoolmates on the school premises.

The incident, which has rocked the community, happened during the lunch break on Thursday afternoon.

It is alleged that while the children were playing, two boys, aged between 11 and 15, grabbed the girl and took turns raping her. The suspects, who are neighbours of the victim, have not been arrested pending police investigations.

Parents Sowetan spoke to expressed concern that the suspects still attended the same school as the victim, which is exacerbating the girl's trauma.

They have urged police to act quickly for "the sake of the child".

Police spokesman Captain Shooz Magudulela said the girl's mother noticed the child was limping.

"When the mother checked, there was a white substance oozing out the girl's private parts," said Magudulela.

Christi Naude, spokesman for the provincial Department of Education, said they would investigate.

A charge of rape has been opened.
