FNB campaign smacks of double standards

Your excellent newspaper often makes me rile, smile and then think some more.

Your excellent newspaper often makes me rile, smile and then think some more.

I was especially touched by the brutal, senseless rape and barbaric murder of Thato Radebe. Her murder not only highlighted violent crime in our communities, it also exposed the utter bias from big business when crime affects poor people.

My anger is based on my observation of FNB's anti-crime campaign vis-a-vis Thato's murder. The campaign was spurred by the ruthless killing of historian, David Rattray. After that callous murder, many of Rattray's friends and colleagues went into overdrive to show that not much was being done about crime. Many more people phoned radio stations and wrote letters to newspapers expressing their disgust. But the same people have not said a word about Thato's murder. I have not heard FNB's view on the dastardly act.

While FNB boss Paul Harris was thinking about how to throw R20 million down the drain on Saturday, my girlfriend's house in Greenhills, Randfontein, was ransacked. Thank God, she was away.

To plough all that money into an awareness campaign about something that most people already know about was a fatuous exercise. If FNB had used the money to strengthen community policing forums, recruit more police or provide more police stations, we would feel confident that business is serious about crime.
