Lebogang Phalula will compete in the 400m race at the Yellow Pages Ultimate Athletics series on Saturday in order to fine-tune her record.

The Soweto-based runner took the decision after scooping the women's 1500m race final for the third time in a row at the third meeting held in Port Elizabeth on Friday night.

She registered a time of 4:14,46. Second-placed Rene Kalmer clocked in at 4:16,39 and third position was grabbed by Mapaseka Makhanya in 4:18,25.

Phalula had earlier won the Secunda and Potchefstroom series, which was held two weeks ago.

She said:" I decided to compete in the 400m so as to sharpen my speed and stamina in order to qualify for the South African championships.

"I will also take part in the 1500m in the last two meetings, which will be held in Stellebosch and Pretoria this month.''

Motsamai Matone of Mr Price showed great improvement in winning the men's 5 000m final in 13:47,97.

Last week the Vaal athlete came second in the same series in Potchefstroom.

Both Phalula and Matone have set their sights on representing South Africa at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Japan in August.

Unfortunately rain kept many spectators away from the event.
