A former mayor of Mnquma municipality in Butterworth is fighting for her life in hospital after she was injured in a shootout with a group of thugs pretending to be police at her home at the weekend.

Police spokesman Jackson Manatha yesterday said a group of men arrived at the home of Ndileka Ndindwa, 62.

The thieves, masquerading as police officers, allegedly shouted for the door to be opened before kicking it in.

"They entered the house, and all the children, who had been watching TV, ran to their mother, who was in the bedroom," said Manatha.

The men fired several shots at Ndindwa's bedroom.

She fired back with her pistol, forcing them to flee. Ndindwa, who is now a businesswoman, was hit in the shoulder.

Police found two "projectiles" at the scene.

"Ndindwa might have wounded one of the robbers because bloodstains were found on the premises," said Manatha.

A case of attempted murder has been opened, but no arrests have been made yet.
