In a major shake-up of the local recording industry, Afro-pop heart-throb Ntando Bangani and kwaito singer Siphiwe "Brown Dash" Mpamile have dumped their recording label.

The stars were contracted to TS Records. Word has it they left the record company because of dissatisfaction with their contracts.

They wanted a bigger slice of the cake than the one they were currently offered.

The artists parted ways with TS Records this week after a long and tense meeting with the label's management.

They are rumoured to be starting their own label, which is expected to be launched in April.

TS Records has played down the sudden resignation of their star musicians. Instead, they have said it was part of the artists' growth and claim to have let them go.

"There is currently a restructuring exercise at TS Holdings," said Sipho Dlamini, one of the company's executives.

Dlamini added that there was no signed recording contract between the artists and themselves.

"We just had a verbal agreement," he said.

TS Records co-owner Thembinkosi Nciza said the company parted ways amicably with the artists.

Asked why they would let a best-selling artist such as Ntando go, Nciza said: "He was not the only artist selling, we had Mzekezeke and DJ S'bu. It was more a question of principle than sales."

Brown Dash recorded the popular Puff'n Puss song, and Ntando released two albums, Imvelaphi, which featured the smash hit Dali Wami, as well as Kwantu.

The artists could not be reached for comment.
