A medical doctor and a pharmacist yesterday pleaded not guilty to stealing drugs worth R3000 from the Mthatha Hospital Complex last month.
Ortrum Meisner-Krich, 43, a German national, and Norah Katende-Kyende, 39, from Uganda, were arrested last month.
They work part-time at the complex and are full-time lecturers at the Walter Sisulu University.
They are currently out on bail of R1500 each.
According to the indictment, police found medication totalling about R3000 at their homes during a search.
The suspects are alleged to have organised for patients to visit the hospital and pretend they were ill.
After seeing a doctor, medication would be prescribed for the bogus patients, which the accused would then take for themselves.
In one instance, Meisner-Krich took medication on behalf of her gardener, who was not sick.
The case was postponed to March 6 for the state to call its witnesses, who were not present in court yesterday.
