A sordid tale of pornography and brutal rape unfolded in the Johannesburg high court yesterday as the trial of alleged serial rapist Mongezi Jinxela began.

A young woman told how Jinxela allowed her to pray before he made her lie on top of pornographic magazines and raped her.

The woman was one of 65 who were allegedly raped by Jinxela during a 10-year reign of terror that ended in 2004.

Jinxela allegedly gained the trust of his victims by promising them jobs.

He then allegedly took the women to the veld where he raped them - some more than once. He would then allegedly rob them of their belongings.

Jinxela is said to have met his victims in the Johannesburg inner city and in the Southdale, Southgate and Westgate shopping malls.

He pleaded not guilty to 261 counts, including 71 charges of rape, 64 of kidnapping, 61 of assault and 62 of aggravated robbery.

Reliving her ordeal yesterday, the woman, now 20, said she met Jinxela on July 21 2004 while she was waiting for a taxi.

She said after they exchanged greetings, Jinxela asked if she was looking for a job.

"I said no. I told him that I was still a student ... but that my mother was looking for a job," she said.

The woman said Jinxela then convinced her to go with him to his workplace in Robertsville "to represent" her mother.

"We boarded a taxi to Johannesburg. On the way we got out at a place unknown to me. We then started walking towards a bushy area," said the woman.

The woman said as they were walking Jinxela stopped in front of a rubbish bin near some shops.

"He went straight to the rubbish bin and took out pornographic books. He offered me one of the books to page through, but I refused," said the woman.

"He said that he wanted to have sex with me. I refused and he warned me not to be stubborn because he was going to assault me.

"I begged him to give me a chance to pray and he afforded me the opportunity. I knelt down and prayed. After I said 'amen' he took my clothes off," she said.

The woman said Jinxela then scattered pornographic magazines on the ground and ordered her to lie on top of them. She said he then raped her.

The woman is expected to be cross-examined today.
