Ex-cop in gem sting

Elisha Molefe

A 39-year-old former policeman will appear at the Mmabatho magistrates' court today on a charge of dealing in unpolished diamonds.

The unnamed man was arrested by a task team that had been monitoring his movements for some time, police spokesman Captain Jacob Mothibi said.

A deal was about to be struck at the centre of Mafikeng in North West yesterday when police pounced on the alleged dealer.

Mothibi said an altercation had ensued between the dealer and the police. He initially managed to run away but was recaptured.

The dealer was charged with possession and trading in illegal diamonds.

l Meanwhile, police are appealing to members of the public to help them apprehend two suspects responsible for terrorising people at the Ramosadi village, near Mafikeng. The suspects are only known as Canase and Ngini.

Mothibi warned the public not to approach the suspects because they are armed and dangerous. He said if spotted, the police should be called on 082-374-0383.
